The “Art in Community Project: Art Lands on the Bird Paradise”: Art Exhibition Inspired by "Tou Tei (Earth God) Cult" & Works by Participants of Handicraft Workshops
The “Art in Community Project – Art Lands on the Bird Paradise” is the continuation of the “Art Lands on the Bird Paradise – Community Art Project” initiated last year.
Drawing experience from the 2013 project, the current programme strives to foster closer interactions between the participating artists and the community of Horta da Mitra district. This year’s event is focused on "Tou Tei (Earth God) Cult", with a series of handicraft workshops launched in May for residents and visitors alike to take part. Manual labor was once the major production mode and lifeblood of many local traditional industries, but with the technological advances, handicraft industries became manufactures. Therefore the project aims to promote handicraft creation, using new materials and techniques to illustrate traditional culture inspired by "Tou Tei (Earth God) Cult", prompting handicraft workshops to draw on Tou Tei (Earth God or Goddess) as the main creative theme, while letting participants grasp some basic skills, thus ultimately arousing their attention and concern over traditional culture.
The programme also features interesting talks on all but forgotten folk traditions, with the first one hosted by Vong Kai Fai, Vice president of Tou Tei Temple Association of Fok Tak Hall of Horta da Mitra(Associação de Cheok Chai Un Fok Tak Chi Tou Tei Mio Chek Lei Wui de Macau), on the Earth God Festival and relevant activities, including its most representative function “Scramble for Floral Tributes”, which became rare in the mid-1960s. Mr. Vong will also shed light on the “Festive Lantern-bidding”, formerly held during the festival but nowadays forgotten and thus totally alien to the younger generations.
Nevertheless, these once popular activities have inspired artists to create and some of them particularly research on "Tou Tei (Earth God) Cult", in a bid to revive the long lost traditions through their productions.
The main exhibition under this Art in Community Project will take place from June 14 to July 9, featuring artworks in various media by six Macao artists, inspired by local culture, the Tou Tei Temple and/or the Horta da Mitra community.
