Art Research Project: Macau Canidrome – Pouching Tsai Solo Exhibition

The dog-racing stadium is a place full of wonders, with many strange and fantastic events in its 84 year history. From the stadium’s booming business of the ‘70s and ‘80s to its decline in recent years, innumerable greyhounds have lived their short lives here. Introduced from the West to Shanghai and then to Macau, dog-racing began as a form of entertainment that symbolized modern competition, but eventually became an outdated pastime that died out over the years. It is interesting that during the stadium’s decades of operation, at times when there weren’t any races, the field was rented out to nearby primary and secondary schools to hold sports events. People and dogs shared this space, with the sports events in this dog-racing stadium becoming a childhood memory of many Macau people. Another notable event in the stadium’s long history is the mass-amnesty of March 29, 1990, when a large number of undocumented illegal immigrants registered for residence permits in this very stadium. Out of the 45,000 people who registered that day, 23,000 were eventually given residence permits. These various circumstances have brought this stadium to the strange, complex state it is in today, a place that has seemingly become an exception to city planning, a kind of impossible possibility of Macau. During my residency, I dug up all kinds of threads about this stadium and rearranged them to depict an imaginary ‘place of exception’ where I have never been before.
