Art Space” -- Documentary Exhibition

“WeArt Space” -- Documentary Exhibition

In 2001 we founded the Old Ladies' House Art Space, which was relocated to Estábulo Municipal in 2003 and thus we renamed it as Ox Warehouse. In 2018, Ox Warehouse changed again its location to the new exhibition venue - Post-Ox Warehouse Experimental Site. Since day one, we have been staying true to our founding mission, striving to create a non-governmental contemporary art space for and by the people, through promoting contemporary art at different levels and in various forms, encouraging experimental artwork and fostering diversified creation.
Now into the 18th year with an operating record in three different venues, we have presented more than 300 exhibitions, performances and screenings, some bigger than others, nearly 10 community art projects, over 70 lectures and seminars, and around 20 artist-in-residence programs as well as more than 100 workshops and courses, plus countless assorted art activities. We can say that our art space reflects to some extent the state of Macao's art development (especially contemporary art and experimental creation), while leaving an important mark in the local cultural context. This documentary exhibition intends to reveal materials of our activities in the first decade of our art space, in a retrospective showcasing of the reality of Macao's culture and art.

2019 Untitled Poems - MIPAF - Macau International Performance Art Festival 2019

Untitled Poems - MIPAF - Macau International Performance Art Festival 2019

As one of the major annual events conducted by the Ox Warehouse, MIPAF invites to Macau artists that are actively involved in the international art scene, in hopes to foster the exchange of creative approaches, with a manifestation of distinctive artistic personalities; as one would recognize, when the artist’s body becomes the medium, by turning observations of his own habitat into experimental interpretations and critiques, will bring forth a specified expression that reflects our state of ideologies and contexts. The elements of ‘action’, ‘body’ and ‘happenings’ in the Avant-garde Art, which articulate in the art community a theatrical expression of freedom; in recent years, performance art festivals have ceased to generate fertile grounds for the new and the unconventional-this particular form of art poses the power to enthrall. It is the aim of MIPAF to showcase a new generation of performance artists, with their idiosyncratic personas and disposition of creative practices. The Ox Warehouse has by far featured prominent artists from the cross-strait four cities, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Norway, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, France and Sweden; their performance works have resulted in multifaceted dialogues that invoked cultural shifts, social theories of a dynamic embodiment, psychoanalysis and political ecology.

We are pleased to announce the Ox Warehouse will be hosting MIPAF this year, on 18th & 19th September in Rua do Volong No.15, where 18 artists with diverse regional backgrounds would present with us their latest works, to stimulate our wildest fantasies, with their deepest concerns on humanity. Traditional Chinese poetry has epitomized the very essence of Classical literature, on a curious note some poems were often left "untitled". The "untitled" works might have indicated that some things are better left unsaid; or the author did not wish for the title to contextualize what we see, by revealing the theme of the poetry. For the unsaid could be a powerful tool, the nameless works in contemporary art are no less than remarkable; they are works of art to bear unspeakable pain, obscure emotions, forlorn hopes or unrequited dreams. The show will present to the Macau audience, a comprehensive view on international and interregional works compelled to humanitarian purposes.

Hot Flows - Pearl River Delta Arts Retrospective in Macao

Hot Flows - Pearl River Delta Arts Retrospective in Macao

OrganisationArt Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine ArtsOx Warehouse
CuratorHu Bin (Deputy director of Art Museum of GAFA)Noah Ng (President of Ox Warehouse)
Programme researcherQu Chang (Curator of PARA SITE)

It is our aim to examine the Pearl River Delta's meteoric progress of urbanization and its cultural phenomena developed in a considerable dualism. In this prospect, the occurring “Pearl River Delta Arts Retrospective” is introduced as a triennial to feature in-depth reviews of the region; by scrutinizing each organization working in this conurbation, in the varied forms of creative communities, collectives and institutions. With these concerning entities, in our previous collaborative projects, we have since established a strong connection in hope to stimulate the unorthodox ecology and practices in the arts. In 2016 we have presented 9 practitioner groups distinctive to the PRD, looking at how such formations have shaped the cultural landscape in the region and its relevance for today’s socio-political context. Therefore, in our last exhibition the core subject of “Capillaries of the Field” have resulted as an intricate network throughout the area, in the advocacy of a thriving creative industry.

Three years have passed, the second edition of the “PRD Arts Retrospective” has proposed “How Flows” as a working title, and appointed 9 artist groups to exhibit their trajectory of integration as a community-oriented model in the Pearl River Delta. The concept draws on colonial preoccupations with the plume of “smoke” as sources of likely contagion in the effect of temperature and moisture, the burning ‘smoke’ rising from opium destruction at Humen, and the noxious veil of “smog” enveloping the complexity of our urban-rural divide; such environmental commonality functions as powerful means to communicate messages on localism as an urban phenomena.

Hence the very idea of “Hot Flows” underlines the context of globalization and urbanization associated with the geography of the region, which engenders social development and cultural cooperation of the delta’s strategic cluster. For this reason, the chosen representatives will survey the evolution of curatorial strategies and artistic creations, by conceding into the cultural confluences in this zone. As we examine the interconnections within the region, the identity of our project evaluates the entanglement of geography, prevailing attitudes and correlative social activities, of all catering to the ever-evolving art scene across the region.
