Open the Door to Art: 2012 Macao Artists' Studios Open Days

Open the Door to Art: 2012 Macao Artists' Studios Open Days

This small city constantly holds cultural activities. Enthusiasts who have been to many exhibitions to feast eyes on excellent artworks probably want to know what creation is all about as well as how local artists formulate their concepts and then convert them into artworks in their studios.
Macau is a small, densely crowded city where fast pace of life is now the social norm. Who would have thought that there are still some art “freaks” hiding in factories, buildings, or shacks in narrow alleys, persistently engaging in a wide variety of artistic pursuits, such as painting, making sculptures, taking photos, and making videos?
In the Western world, it has long been an annual practice to open creatives’ studios to the public to promote community culture, a habit that is still quite rare in Macau. Ox Warehouse has invited nearly 20 artists, who live in different communities located either on the Macau Peninsula or the outlying islands, to open their little creative corners of the world to the public on two weekends during the month of May, which will offer an excellent opportunity for these artists to interact with visitors face-to-face and share their works.

Artists:

Under Heaven: Documentary Photography by Chun Wai

A Contemporary Art Exhibition Call for Entries

Free Individual Travel… How Much Free?
A Contemporary Art Exhibition

Call for Entries

The notion of ‘freedom’ can trigger in us lots of imaginations and echoes, or maybe just illusions that seemingly haunt our daily lives. The concept of free individual travel isn’t something unique to contemporary people as the ancient troubadours were indeed pioneers who knew already very well its true meaning. In recent years, the trend of free individual travel has become widely popular, while at the same time gradually generating extremes of behavior, straying from its originally positive and subjective nature. (As a tourist destination favored by China’s Individual Visit Scheme policy) Macao SAR experiences vividly this phenomenon, as its policies have been changing local social forms and people’s lifestyle imperceptibly. In mainland China, free individual travel, or Individual Visit Scheme, is understood as a government policy. Though it is interpreted differently by each region, universally it should be more a lifestyle than a political issue.

It seems that everyone has been, one time or another, a free individual traveler. As soon as we cross the SAR boundary to Hong Kong, or pass to Gongbei, we become free individual travelers. However, when the Individual Visit Scheme and the resulting free individual travelers flocking to the city become key components of Macao’s development, we may invariably feel some uneasiness, where crowdedness and leisure, tranquility and bustling, tolerance and arrogance…are all intertwined, although it seems these contradictions have become somewhat harmonious.
Artists are invited to draw inspiration from this theme – the free individual travel phenomenon – to create artworks. Exhibition entries are medium free and artists can produce artworks in different formats to express their feelings towards this multifaceted phenomenon.

REtroduction Macau & Hong Kong Multi-Art Exhibition

REtroduction Macau & Hong Kong Multi-Art Exhibition

Macau & Hong Kong Multi-Art Exhibition

REtroduction is a cross-regional and cross-media exchange program for visual arts. A pool of Hong Kong and Macao creatives from different fields settle in Ox Warehouse to allow their seemingly disparate perspectives to interact, collide and germinate into truly original and creative presentations that span from 2-D graphics, 3-D models to multimedia installations. These credible works portray the uniqueness within the social, cultural and local settings of the two cities.

Besides exhibits like paintings, sculptures, handicrafts, knitworks and fashion products, there are others to be created with the assistance of visitors’ digital devices.

Why REtroduction?

Art exchanges between Hong Kong and Macao have been in vogue over recent years with frequent meetings of artists pulled together by just one-hour boat ride. Though the lifestyles and practices of art workers from these two regions are similar, with only minor differences, there is somehow a broader divergence in their artistic and cultural contexts stemming from the diverse influence of former colonial powers, Britain and Portugal.

In a hectic place like Hong Kong where no one can afford to stopover under the spinning wheel of time, how do the invited artists of this city shake off the stress and let their creativity flare? In a drastically changed Macao, notoriously famous for its booming gaming industry, how to show the world that its creative community is all the more ready to use their imagination to enliven the city?

For this exhibition, we want to pool together a selection of creative people from different fields, in order to spark off a chemistry between people and works, turning old materials into ingredients for new creations and injecting new ideas into old concepts. In the end, a collection of innovative works of visual, audio and tactile fruition are born out of bits and pieces.

(Cora, Si Wun Cheng

Winder-bell,

I Like You When You Are Quiet

I Like You When You Are Quiet Mixed media illustrations by Yolanda Kog

A shy girl with a red apple-like face beaming sweet smiles. She speaks so softly that you may not even hear her, but only see her shiny eyes turning as her mind strays away to nowhere. We are virtually in a conversation yet neither of us understands what the other utters, while our minds wander away in their own different directions…

The commotion in her heart never rests. She exerts herself struggling, fighting against the social system until she finally lives the way she desires. Such are her creative ideas: Silence is in the eye of the storm. Despite of a very noisy and chaotic world, there’s still a silence area – a void – in our inner minds. Keeping silent does not mean speechlessness. Silence can be more expressive than words. Voicelessness is eternity. You are eternity.

As the tale goes, there’s a mushroom-headed girl without a mouth. Actually she’s not a big head but has no brain, neither is she a big brain where grows mushroom. Said the prince: “…Maybe you can’t find anyone in the world like me, who just tried all-out to come here. Now here I see nothing but you. But you apparently ignore me. What are you actually busy with? …I think, you
aren’t really a human being, but just a mushroom…”Answered the useless mushroom: “What I’m busy doing is not something you can feel with your naked eyes and what’s in my head it’s not something you can see right now…”
“Look, how powerless and fragile words may look. Just let’s do it quietly in silence. A thousand ideas have come and gone. How can I explain to others?”

Yolanda is such a girl, with a mind full of whims. Under her lovely and mild appearance hides a perceptual world of passion, confusions and melancholy. Though a fashion design major, she chose handicraft making (handmade and sewing) as her art career. Yet what she loves most is to create illustrations. She likes the style of Japanese Ukiyo-e (literally pictures of the floating world) and her most favorite painter is Takato Yamamoto, whose images are imbued with sensuality, violence and mystery. But she also likes works by Osamu Yokonami, which are neat, fresh yet occasionally funny and that can make her laugh. For Yolanda, loving simultaneously these two kinds of utterly different styles is just like the wrestling game between reality and her inner contradictions. She tries to elaborate further but gives up. Whatever! Just let all, quiet  down.
